CORRECTION IN THE LIST OF “NEW FOODS” OF THE EUROPEAN UNION
The correction of the list of new foods of the European Union (EU), corrected by Commission Implementing Regulation 2018/1013, will enter into force on August 13. In this post we will announce some of the changes of the previous Execution Regulation 2017/2470 that affect the new Regulation.
In another post, we talked about the new European Regulation that began to be applied on January 1, 2018 and we analyze the novelties and improvements introduced by the new regulation of new foods, also known as ‘novel foods’. The corrections included in this new regulation are related to: – specifications or conditions of use of several new authorized foods, – authorized foods, but not included in the list, – food categories added by mistake, – indication of exclusion of pregnant or breastfeeding women in the case of certain new foods, – typographical errors.
We highlight some of the changes in the list of new foods: New foods “Echinacea purpurea extract from cell cultures” and “2′-fucosyl-lactose (microbial source)”, among others, are added to the list.
The entry of “L-alanyl-L-glutamine” is added to the category of “drinks adapted to intense muscular wasting, especially for athletes”, and to the category “food supplement” the entry of “lycopene tomatoes”. “Glucosamine HCl” is deleted from the category “milk-based beverages and similar products intended for young children” as it was added by mistake. Although the “Wheat germ extract rich in spermidine (Triticum aestivum)” was authorized for “the adult population excluding pregnant or lactating women” was not added to that category, so it is appropriate to add this entry .
The following description is added to the “Antarctic Krill oil of Euphausia superba”: “Oxidative stability: all food products containing Euphausia superba Krill oil must demonstrate their oxidative stability through an appropriate and nationally and internationally recognized analysis methodology ( for example, by the AOAC) ». The entry of “L-alanyl-L-glutamine” is added to the category of “drinks adapted to intense muscular wasting, especially for athletes”, and to the category “food supplement” the entry of “lycopene tomatoes”.
If you have questions about the Regulation and the new corrections on the list of new foods, do not hesitate to contact us without obligation. It is important that both the composition of the product or food supplements and the label comply with all legal requirements regarding the list of new foods.
