published Implementing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/doue\/2023\/194\/L00004-00007.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regulation (EU) 2023\/1581,<\/a> amending the previous regulation that applies the new conditions of use for the new food product <strong><em>\u201cOleoresin Rich in Astaxanthin from the Haematococcus pluvialis Alga.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Astaxanthin<\/strong> is a member of the carotenoid family, with the most well-known ones being beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, and they are commonly found in living organisms.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, all plants synthesize them because they play an important role during photosynthesis, facilitating a reaction that uses light and carbon dioxide to produce organic compounds and oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>With this new <strong>Regulation<\/strong>, which came into effect on August 22, 2023, the use of the new food product is expanded to include dietary supplements, with the following <strong>maximum astaxanthin levels<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Children aged 3 to 10: 2.3 mg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Adolescents aged 10 to 14: 5.7 mg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>General population aged over 14: 8 mg<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As stated in the Regulation, additional specific labeling requirements are also included.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>\u201cThe denomination of the new food product on the labeling of food products containing it shall be \u2018Oleoresin Rich in Astaxanthin from the Haematococcus pluvialis Alga.&#8217;\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em> <\/em><em>The labeling of dietary supplements containing oleoresin rich in astaxanthin from the Haematococcus pluvialis alga shall include a declaration that these dietary supplements should not be consumed:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>a) If other dietary supplements containing astaxanthin esters are consumed on the same day<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>b) By infants and children under 3 years of age<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>c) For infants and children under 10 years of age*. <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>d) For infants, children and adolescents under 14*. <\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em> <\/em><em>* Depending on the age group for which the food supplement is
