EFSA has updated the maximum tolerable upper intake level for Vitamin B6 and Selenium
Recently, EFSA has published new scientific opinions revising the maximum tolerable upper intake level for vitamin B6 and selenium.
Although up to date the maximum upper intake level per adult was 300 μg for Selenium and 25 mg for Vitamin B6, after the publication of said opinions these values have been reduced, so that now the maximum tolerable level intake for Selenium is 255 μg and for Vitamin B6 12 mg.
These scientific opinions from EFSA can be consulted in the following links:
However, let’s also take into account that the Directive 2002/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of June 10, on food supplements, as well as EC Regulation 1925/2006 on vitamins, minerals and other substances that can be added to food, they provided for the adoption of specific values for the maximum and minimum levels of vitamins and minerals contained in food supplements, although they have not been established to date.
Therefore, these levels would not have legal value, but they are used as a reference for risk management, both for food business operators and for the control from authorities, to comply with the obligation that only safe food can be marketed.
